About Shantonu

I am a physicist with a Ph.D. degree in nanotechnology and materials engineering and an expert in the emerging research field of soft electronics. I am currently a postdoctoral scholar at the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). I obtained my Ph.D. degree from the Technical University Ilmenau, Germany, and the M.Sc. in Physics from the Lund University, Sweden.

Professional Experiences

Postdoctoral Researcher

California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI), University of California, Santa Barbara (UCBS)

The RE Touch Lab is affiliated with the California NanoSystems Institute, Media Arts and Technology program, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In this multidisciplinary lab, I lead and manage the Soft Electronics and Optoelectronic Sensors projects, where we aim to develop skin-like soft optoelectronic sensors for applications in advanced health monitoring, bioengineering, haptics, and virtual reality. Additionally, I am also involved in other collaborative projects related to haptics and soft robotics that requires a wide range of multidisciplinary research expertise in the field of physics, electronics, optics, wave mechanics, bioengineering, signal processing, emerging materials, technologies, and advanced manufacturing.

July 2018 – current
Graduate Researcher

Institute for Micro-& Nanotechnology (IMN), TU Ilmenau

I initiated the Stretchable Electronics project, and established and developed the “Stretchable Electronics Lab” from scratch. Later, I led and managed the project for over four years and mentored several graduate and undergraduate students. Here, I pioneered the concept of “Metamorphic Electronics” and demonstrated a number of functional devices. In parallel, I was also closely involved and contributed to other projects related to assembly and packaging of microscopic components on flexible substrates, roll-to-roll self-assembly, nanoxerography, and nanoparticles.

May 2013 - May 2018
Researcher

Lund Nano Lab (LNL), Lund University

The LNL is an open research facility and is one of the world leaders in the field of III-V nanowires and nanodevices. Here, I contributed to two inspiring projects aiming to study the biocompatibility of different nanodevices and nanomaterials.
